Boy! That and global warming too?

A favourite history teacher of mine many years ago began one test with the statement "The Holy Roman Empire was neither Holy, nor Roman, nor an Empire. Comment".

If that beloved mentor were still alive I am sure he would have created a parallel to this question for the United Nations -which are surely NOT united!

But more important I think it is obvious to those who will be truthful with themselves that the organization has been an abject failure throughout its history -with one coincidental exception.

The exception of course is the UN "Police Force" in the Korean War -which only was possible because the Russians had earlier stomped out of the Gerneral Assembly and the Security Council -and hence were not there to veto the proposed UN force to go to Korea.

They won't make THAT mistake again!

Of course from the beginning there was a conceptual problem.

The true founding concept was the imposition of peace from above. By above of course I mean on the part of the (then) strongest nations in the world. These were the wartime allies Russia, the United States and Great Britain. Thrown in for apparent international content were France and Nationalist China. Don't kid yourself -they were never really "equals".

Anyway -these nations were, for reasons that would later prove hard to justify, given the power to "veto" or outright turn down without debate, anything they chose. This crippled the organization from the get-go!

How could any democratic organization give one member way more power than another?

Well, the point was that it WASN'T a democratic organization. It was to be a well-intentioned bully -and in that role and with that philosophy it might even have worked.

Sadly it quickly evolved into an international debating society well sprinkled with crooks who were more than willing to collect huge sums of money and have their way with them.

And we collectively turned a blind eye to it.

This debating society also quickly found that it enjoyed contradicting the United States on almost anything it could -and that it could also easily criticize Israel which rapidly became a favourite whipping-boy.

But did this glorious debating society come together to reduce famine, to prevent war, to reduce human suffering?

Not so as you'd particularly notice!

It has more defined itself by its failures than by its accomplishments.

It failed to act in Hungary in either the 50s or the late 60s. It failed to act in Bosnia, Rhawanda or Darfur.

It did act after the first Gulf War -giving among others the son of Kofi Annan (then General Secretary) tens if not hundreds of millions of ill-gained "oil for food" dollars that proved to have nothing to do with food for the intended beneficiaries but plenty to do with enriching ole Kofi's son -and he is just used as an example because readers are likely to remember his name. There are plenty of parallels.

Think Zimbabwe! Think Congo!

So why am I mentioning this now?

Because the global warming crowd, notoriously imprecise and ill-advised in climatology, now propose to turn over to the UN the responsibility for administering the anti-warming funds which should eventually run into the multi-trillions of dollars.

Why does this not surprise me?

The organization that has proven itself totally incapable of successfully administering ANYTHING is now going to take over the biggest and most complicated as well as the most important task ever attempted by mankind?

Spare me!

These guys couldn't administer a large scale henhouse. I was going to suggest the towel concession in a brothel -but that is WAY too high-tech for these miscreants!

Before we rush to place power of taxation on the plate of this gang of thieves don't you think it would be appropriate to examine their track record?

As a geographer and professional pilot who can actually READ weather reports and maps I have been dismayed at the level of science expressed and understood by Nobel prize winner Al Gore and his acolytes.

Now as a (sadly) highly experienced taxpayer I am about to see the asylum turned over to the lunatics, and the single most corrupt club known to mankind given control over our unspeakably large global warming fees.

If you must collect these fees (think cap and trade) -for GOD'S SAKE at least see that they are well-administered.

Or better perhaps, close down the UN, sell the real-estate -and use the resulting savings to clean up our planet.

This would be money well spent!

Correction!!!

I stand both corrected and delighted!

The Copenhagen Conference DID NOT as feared result in a United Nations mandate to collect and dispense trillions of our hard-earned dollars to defeat global warming and line the pockets of a select few.

Saner heads prevailed and virtually no damage (in fact virtually NOTHING) will apparently result from this hugely expensive get-together of tree-huggers.

Maybe there is hope for us yet.

Of course Obama claimed the outcome was a huge victory -and God knows he needs one pretty soon -but we can forgive him his hubris since it is free.

Toronto's mayor David Miller can be forgiven for accepting (on the part of the Canadian people) the Dinosaur award for green culpability. It too is free.

Now if we can just get on with cleaning up our environmental act as responsibly as possible without driving ourselves into bankruptcy the world will be unfolding as it should...

I personally promise one and all that Halifax, St Johns and Peggy's Cove will not be inundated in the near future. Lunenburg and Charlottetown are also safe. I can say this safely because unlike the "scientists" who were crying havoc I quietly checked sea level records for the past few centuries.

Guess what? No significant long-term change.

Whew!

The UN engineered hysteria of global environmental apocalypse pandered by such shills as Al Gore ( who has seen his income rise from $2m per year to $100 million per year… not bad for a snake-oil salesman) is scandalous. The leaked East Anglia scientific statistical manipulations have sent the press rocketing around like a pin-ball machine - shrieking about Global Warming then braying about Climate Change when the warming was not evident, thence to equally vociferous treatment of Denying the Decline and other back-peddling from the edge of that abyss of “statistical mis-statements “.

The cap and trade market in carbon dioxide emissions, the so-called ETS (Emissions Trading Scheme) has done nothing to “cool “the planet. It has merely driven up the costs of energy, made ordinary people poorer and giant energy corporations wealthier.

The current plan of the UN has ETS becoming a global market device, generating carbon credits - a system apparently rife with profiteering, fraud and corruption. Europol has uncovered a massive fraud (stealing over $7billion in 18 months) by organized crime in Europe’s carbon trading markets that has “endangered the credibility” of carbon trading. Really? I was so sure it would work like clock-work.

The Clean Development Mechanism is rife with allegations of profiteering and corruption. Really? I was so sure that finally the UN would do something right. Thankfully Copenhagen had limited, if any “success” and we will be saved immediate “reparations” and avoid shelling out billions. Doubtless more UN meetings to save the planet will be arranged when they can agree to agree. Who knows- by then the Bering Strait Ice Bridge may have re- formed.

And as a bonus we thankfully no longer have to watch Toronto mayor David Miller in Copenhagen grandstanding shamelessly claiming he was embarrassed by Canada! Fossil Awards! Really! A rather juvenile antic when one is out to save the world.

We in the hinterland watch a daily convoy of hundreds of large trucks lumbering along the 401 spiriting Toronto’s garbage to far-flung disposal areas. Quite the carbon footprint. Quite the embarrassment yourself, Mr. Miller. Perhaps he should act locally before he emotes globally.
